Why do people drink and drive? This is a complex question that has come under increasing scrutiny in recent decades. The public has become more and more aware of the dangers posed by drinking and driving thanks in part largely to an organization in the United States called Mothers Against Drunk Driving which has mounted a very successful campaign to educate people about the dangers of drinking and driving and to discourage people from drunk driving.
Drinking and driving laws vary from country to country but in most states the drink driving limits state that a person with a blood alcohol content of higher than 0.08 is considered to be impaired. Having a blood alcohol content over this limit will result in a Driving Under the Influence charge in most states.
Drinking and driving consequences can be very severe. In some states, it will result in an immediate three month suspension of driving privileges if you are found to be driving under the influence. In other countries, your car can be impounded and, in some cases, seized by the local authorities and put up for auction. Most people do not want to find themselves without a car in order to get around so this is often enough of a deterrent for drinking and driving. For repeat offenders, though, courts can impose mandated devices for automobiles owned by people convicted of a drunk driving charge. These include but are not limited to specialized locks that require multiple complicated combinations to unlock them and in-car breath test devices.
The province of Ontario has the most stringent anti-drunk driving laws in all of North America. In Ontario, refusing a roadside breath test results in an immediate license suspension of 24 hours. If convicted, drivers face a fine of 60-$500 and a 30-day license suspension. Furthermore, Ontario has implemented a zero-tolerance level for any kind of alcohol impairment in drivers under the age of 21.
In Russia in 2010, President Dimitri Medvedev implemented a zero-tolerance drinking and driving law. It wasn’t long, however, before serious protests erupted across the country in response to the legislation. It was very difficult for police to lay drunk driving charges as well because they were required to have not only a breathalyzer test and a sobriety test but also a doctor’s opinion that the driver was drunk.
Some drinking and driving facts are extremely well-known. It has been scientifically proven that alcohol has profound effects on a person’s ability to drive safely. Alcohol is a depressant and it can cause a driver to significantly misjudge their abilities to handle an automobile. Impairment in things such as reaction time have been documented through scientific experiments. It is also known that eye muscles function more slowly and eyes react more slowly to incoming stimuli. Eye movements and perceptions are significantly altered by the use of alcohol and blurred vision can be a result. People who have been drinking can also experience distortions in their night vision capabilities. Their ability to track the car’s location on the road is also disrupted.
But perhaps the most serious drinking and driving consequences is the impairment it exhibits on a driver’s concentration. The driver may not be able to pay as much attention to things happening around him or her and/or may become drowsy from the depressant qualities of alcohol. Alcohol also affects a driver’s comprehension and coordination and the ability to coordinate eye/hand/foot movements may be considerably impaired. This impairment is the leading cause of accidents related to alcohol consumption!
