Everyone has read or been told about the benefits of flossing with dental floss. Teeth flossing is done to help remove food and plaque from between the teeth and close to the gum where toothbrushes might not get to. Most dentists recommend that you floss at least once a day, so let’s have a look at some dental floss products.
Dental floss comes in a few different types, but at its base it’s a bundle of thin nylon filaments or a plastic ribbon that can be inserted between the teeth and slowly pulled back and forth to remove any food or plaque build-up. It is supplied in plastic containers that usually hold between 10 and 15m of floss. There are many different types of dental floss but above all the most important variable between them is the thickness. People have different sized gaps between their teeth and floss with the correct thickness for you must be selected. If they are too thick it won’t work effectively between the teeth, but if too thin it will snap. Dental tape is another product that is very similar to dental floss but is thicker than regular floss. Floss is also available in a waxed floss variety, that again is thicker than regular floss but can sometimes contain essential oils or enzymes that are claimed to aid with removing plaque.
Wooden Dental Sticks
Wooden dental sticks are made from birch wood and soaked in a sodium fluoride solution and are used in much the same way as a hybrid between a toothpick and dental floss to remove plaque and tartar from teeth. They are often mint flavored to make their use more pleasant. Their main use is to dislodge any food that has been caught in teeth and are particularly useful for cleaning around dental work.
Some manufacturers have created a device that they call the electric water flosser which is a powered device that you can use to floss between teeth more efficiently. Some of these devices are shaped like toothbrushes but instead of bristles have a bow like structure of dental floss that you can insert between your teeth and turn the device on. It then moves the floss for you. There is no evidence that these are better than just normal dental floss.
Now that you’ve seen some of the different types of floss available, you have no excuse to adopt a regular flossing routine and spend some time caring for your teeth – they’re the only ones you have and the only ones you’re ever going to get.
