Arthritis is a term that is used for a group of over 100 conditions. Both children and adults are afflicted with arthritis. Most commonly, the symptoms of arthritis will show up in the joints, but it can be systemic (affecting the entire body).
Different types of arthritis will have different symptoms.
Osteoarthritis-known as DJD (degenerative joint disease), the symptoms affects feet, hips, knees, and fingers.
Rheumatoid-the immune system attacks the lining in the joints. This type is systemic.
Gout-uric acid is not metabolized properly, so builds up and is deposited in joints and other parts of the body. Symptoms come on suddenly and severely.
Juvenile-most common form is rheumatoid. There may be a complete recovery for some children; others suffer their entire life with it.
Ankylosing Spodylitis-inflammatory disease of the spine that can leave vertebra fused and the spine ridged.
Psoriatic-is similar to rheumatoid arthritis. Symptoms are usually mild.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)-it is more commonly known as lupus. The body’s immune system will attack and damage its own joints and organs as if it were foreign tissue.
Health care professionals diagnose arthritis by the symptoms of arthritis, family history, blood test, imaging, and exams.
