Protect Yourself Against the Sun

Woman using sunscreen

By now we are all fairly educated on the damage that the sun can do to our skin but this seems to more true for those of us who are fair and are able to see that damage easily and on a regular basis. People with more resistant skin (which is usually darker) aren’t as aware of the damage that can be done to any skin type by the sun’s harmful rays. Sunscreen and sun protection should be in the vanity case of every women and man as part of a beauty and health regime.

Facial Sunscreen
Protecting your body is crucial to your health and wellbeing. The sun can be as dangerous as all of the “bad boys” of health that we hear about. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight without protection can lead to cancerous growths on the skin and of course, these can spread. From a beauty perspective, the sun can be hazardous to the way that you look. Apart from causing things like freckles, moles and growths, there are also wrinkles, saggy skin and dryness to consider.

We have all been in a position where we can see that someone has sent too much time in the sun and has a rather leathery exterior. Freckles are not all that problematic and some people even find them cute but having wrinkles between the eyes and along the forehead can make you look years older than you actually are. It is important to put an SPF 20 or higher on your face every single day in order to stop discoloration and some of the other reactions mentioned here. SPF stands for sun protection factor, which is an indicator of how high a level of protection you are getting on the area that you have applied sunscreen to.

Sun Protection for Children
Natural sun protection usually comes in the form of wearing things like sun protective hats which stop the rays from getting onto your skin but if you want to look at it in its most natural form, we are talking about your body’s natural ability to fight of those rays. One of the ways that you can increase this natural resistance is through your diet. This is extremely helpful in the case of children who are exposed to the sun all the time and love to be outside.

Sun protection swimwear is another great way to protect your kids. Some of the best things you can eat are watermelons and tomatoes which will boost the skins resistance. If you want to keep the skin moist after a burn you can try feeding your children walnuts, flaxseed and salmon. If any of you have already had a number of burns, it is good to eat cancer fighters like grapefruit, lemons, oranges and limes.

Sun Protection Products
Biodegradable sunscreen is becoming more and more popular because on certain cruises (and other tourism activities) you are forbidden to use sunscreen that cause harm to the aquatic environment and can actually kill fish and other aquatic life. So this may be an option for you if you want to be environmentally friendly. Also, when you pick a sunscreen product don’t go for those which have obscenely high SPF’s, these rarely work.
