Nutrition Tips for Smokers

Nutrition and smoking

Cigarette smoke and nicotine have detrimental effects on the body’s detoxification process. Although most people know about the health problems associated with smokers, many are unaware about how it affects the body from a nutritional point of view. There are some nutrition tips that smokers can keep in mind to try and diminish the effect that smoking has on the body.

How does Smoking Effect Nutrition?
Smoking negatively impacts the way that the body uses nutrients and vitamins. Nicotine and cigarette smoke not only block the absorption of vital minerals but they also drain the body of vital vitamins and minerals – most notably vitamin C and vitamin D which prevent diseases like osteoporosis, help the body to absorb iron and help to prevent diseases.

Vitamin C for Smokers
Smoking just one cigarette can cause the body to lose 25mg of vitamin c – this is the amount found in one normal sized orange. Due to this around 2000mg of extra vitamin C is needed per day. Vitamin C can be found in food stuffs such as oranges, apples, broccoli, tomatoes, cabbage and green peppers. However as it is often impossible to add this much vitamin C into the diet, vitamin supplements for smokers are often required.

Supplements for Smokers
The best vitamins for smokers are usually in the form of a multivitamin that includes the following:
• Vitamin C
• Vitamin E
• Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5 and B6
• Zinc
• Calcium

Another alternative is to take a supplement called Nicovite which has been specially designed as a smokers supplement. Nicovite contains a special formula of antioxidants and vitamins which are targeted for a smoker’s body. Unlike a normal multivitamin (which is mainly targeted at non smokers), this supplement has been researched to include the best ingredients for smokers.

However an individual supplement of vitamin D and vitamin C for smokers can work just as well. As well as taking a supplement, smokers are also advised to increase the amount of antioxidants that they take in – these are usually found in fresh fruits and vegetables.

Quit Smoking
Although vitamin supplements for smokers can improve the way the body detoxifies, the best way to really combat the effects of smoking is to quit. No amount of vitamin supplements can ever get the body working at its normal level whilst it is still being poisoned by cigarette smoke on a daily basis. If you still aren’t convinced read about more reasons to quit smoking. You can try using nicotine patches for smoking cessation!
