Nutrition for eye health

Everything you eat contains vital nutrients that your body needs to keep running and stay in a healthy, working order. Different parts of your body respond to different nutrients, so it’s important that you eat a healthy, balanced diet. But what foods can we eat to promote natural eye health or even improve eye health?

Nutrients for Eye Health
Vitamins C, E and beta-carotene have been linked to preventing age-related macular degeneration, lutein and zeaxanthin can prevent free-radical damage to the macula and vitamin A helps keep cells healthy in vital structures in the eye and also helps in converting light to nerve signals in the eye’s retina. By keeping your diet high in these nutrients for eye health, you go a long way in helping maintain your eye health.

Avocados are very high in lutein. They also contain vitamins A, C, B6 and E, which are all helpful vitamins for eye health. Other sources of lutein are eggs, spinach and kale. Eggs also contain vitamin A, D B12, lecithin and zinc – all useful supplements for eye health. Salmon is another food that can promote natural eye health as it contains omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, B6, B12 and D – again all great additions to your nutrition for eye health. Carrots and broccoli are both great foods to eat for good eye health.

Supplements for Eye Health
There are several great supplements you can take daily to promote great eye health. Beta Carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin are all available in supplement form. For natural eye health, 6 – 10mg supplements of lutein and zeaxanthin and a 5000 UI supplement of beta-carotene can be taken daily. Vitamins C and E can both be taken as a supplement – both these are good vitamins for eye health. Allow yourself a 1,000mg supplement of vitamin A and if you can find it, a 400UI supplement of vitamin E. Other nutrients for eye health that you can take in supplement form are selenium, zinc, copper, manganese and turmeric.

Whichever of these nutrients for eye health you choose to take, or even if you choose to take supplements, you will find that often trying to eat certain kinds of foods to target the health of a single part of the body can mean having to eat loads of different things to try and keep up. Simply increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables you eat is a great start to good eye health. Of course, some fruits and vegetables are better than others for eye health.
