Increase Brain Power With Exercise

Increase brain power

Once you reach the age of 30, your brain begins to decline. It’s especially prominent in women who can notice a difference with each pregnancy. Your brain is like a muscle, the more you use it the stronger and sharper it becomes. There are some simple exercises that can help to erase the fog of forgetfulness and boost your brain power.

One easy way to boost brain power is to start using your non-dominant hand to perform simple tasks. If you’re right handed, start using your left hand to do everyday activities such as eating and brushing your hair or teeth. Even simple tasks performed with your non-dominant hand can produce results.

Using your non-dominant hand to complete simple tasks stimulates the opposite side of your brain. The stimulation increases the blood flow which results in a slowing of the mental aging process and can literally improve mental capacity. Evidence from brain imaging has shown that the brain can form new connections by studying new things.

In the same way that you exercise your body to keep it strong and healthy, you can also exercise your mind to keep it sharp and alert. Performing mental exercises can be easy and fun as well as productive. Try working crossword puzzles, memorizing things such as phone numbers, names, shopping lists and even playing games like chess and checkers.

Practice by memorizing the words to a new song, or a poem and recite them back from memory. Instead of using a calculator for mathematical problems start working them out on your own. Which ever way you choose to exercise your brain, do it at the same time each day. Consistency will help keep the brain on the path to developing and activating new connections.

While it might not seem like your fingers have any connection to brain power, it’s been proven in studies that engaging the fingers to perform more tasks can increase brain power. The movement of the fingers stimulates the nerve endings in the fingers that lead directly to your brain and increases the brains circulation.

This type of exercise is really easy if you like arts and crafts, playing a musical instrument or anything that involves using your fingers a lot. Crafts such as knitting and crocheting, drawing, painting or even playing the piano or a guitar are excellent exercises for increasing the circulation to the brain.

A map of the brain shows that the tiny nerve endings in the tips of the fingers correspond to more areas located in the brain than any other part of the body. One study done by the National Institute of Mental Health showed that finger exercises actually enlarged the brains capacity, increased the numbers of connections between the brains neurons, created new neural pathways and increased circulation.

Self-massage can also help improve your concentration and increase your capacity to remember better. There are two acupressure points located on the back of the neck right at the base of your skull. Cross your hands and place them behind your head with your thumbs resting in the grooves at the sides of the neck.

Lean your head backwards and allow it to rest against the pressure that is created by your index fingers and thumbs. Take slow deep breaths through your nose and exhale through the mouth. While you’re performing the self-massage, allow your entire body to relax. Perform the massages for about five minutes. It will increase the flow of blood and relax the muscles in the neck.

The human brain has a natural ability to renew itself and with the right kind of exercises, you can notice a real difference in your brain capacity and in your memory. Increasing the circulation to the brain means that more oxygen is and nutrients are reaching the brain cells and less waste products are clogging up the brain.
