How to Treat Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps

What are Nasal Polyps?
The polypoidal masses that can be found along the mucous membranes of the nose and paranasal sinuses are called nasal polyps. These are overgrowths that thrive in the mucosa as a result of certain respiratory conditions. Nasal polyps are generally not tender and movable. However, there are nasal polyp cases that bleed and, therefore, require immediate investigation to determine if they are intranasal tumors which need to be removed.

Nasal polyps can be found in both children (anthrochoanal type) and adults (ethmoidal type).

What are the Symptoms of Nasal Polyps?
Since nasal polyps manifest alongside several respiratory conditions, it is safe to assume that an individual may have nasal polyps if he/she suffers from asthma, rhinosinusitis, cystic fibrosis, aspirin intolerance, nasal mastocytosis, and several syndromes such as Young’s, Chrug-strauss, and Kartagener’s among others. Nasal polyps, in general, do not cause any pain or discomfort. However, in cases where polyps bleed or cause excessive pain, there is an immediate need to investigate the polyps and determine how it will be removed to protect the welfare of the patient. The most common among nasal polyps symptoms is the sight of growths within the nose that can be seen during close inspection.

What are Nasal Polyp Removal Methods?
Nasal polyp removal may involve anything from the use of topical creams, steroids, and through nasal polyp surgery. Nasal polyps are known to recur in almost 80% of cases, so opting for surgery is not a guarantee that nasal polyps will not grow back in the future. Most physicians choose to use steroidal treatment alongside the use of topical creams, since this causes minimal discomfort as compared to surgery. However, in extreme conditions where numerous nasal polyps already hamper the breathing of the patient, surgery may be required for nasal polyp treatment.

How Does Nasal Polyp Surgery Work?
Nasal polyp removal through surgery is used in cases where the nasal polyps are too much for mere topical and steroidal treatment. Nasal polyp surgery can be done with local or general anesthesia, depending on the case of the patient. Nasal polyp surgery usually takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the number of polyps needed to be removed. The recovery period is usually 1-3 weeks. There are cases where topical and steroidal treatments are used after surgery to avoid immediate nasal polyps from recurring. To know more about your condition, it is best to seek your doctor for a professional opinion.

I was diagnosed with the same thing in January and had the surgery 2 weeks ago. I’m still recovering, but I haven’t regretted doing it as yet. I wanted to get it out and get better and have it behind me. No one could tell you how the experience will be for you but I advise that before the surgery you try to eat as healthily as possible. Do your research and ask many questions. My belief is that if you give your body the nutrients it needs, it will heal better and faster. Wishing you the best with your decision.
