What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that is often caused by poor dental hygiene practices. It is caused when bacteria sits on the teeth for several days and begins to turn into gingivitis. This can be common among people and it is estimated that almost everyone deals with Gingivitis at some point. Many of them do not even know that they have it and they do not want to get checked. It is important if you think you may have gingivitis, to see a dentist as soon as possible because if left untreated it could lead to periodontitis or tooth loss.

Symptoms of Gingivitis
There are several signs to look out for that may be a symptom of gingivitis. If you experience any of the following gingivitis symptoms you should contact your dentist.
• Bleeding of the gums
• Swelling or puffiness of the gums
• Bad breath
• Your gums turn from a nice pink color to a red color
• Soft and tender gums
• Mouth sores

There are a number of things you can do for the treatment for gingivitis, starting with having your dentist professionally clean your teeth to get rid of all of the plaque and bacteria. The use of a medicated mouthwash is also helpful in killing the bacteria on your gums. You can gargle daily with a home-made saline solutions made of warm water mixed with a few pinches of salt. To help with any pain or tenderness you can rub clove oil unto your gums regularly. This will help sooth your gums and fight the bacteria away. A toothpaste that is made with peppermint oil will also help to treat gingivitis as will cutting high fatty foods out of your diet.

Gingivitis Prevention
The best solutions for how to prevent gingivitis would be to stop gingivitis before it ever appears on your gums. The most important step you can take to prevent gingivitis is to maintain healthy dental hygiene practices. This includes brushing your teeth at least twice a day and preferably after every meal. An electric toothbrush can help you with this step because they are better able to get between your teeth and will leave you with fresher, cleaner teeth.

Selecting a toothpaste that is geared toward fighting gingivitis is another great choice you should make. Another solution for how to prevent gingivitis is flossing at least once a day is equally important because it will get rid of any food and bacteria that is stuck in between your teeth. Finally, keep up with your dentist visits and be sure to have a complete cleaning of your teeth done at least once a year.
