Eating Disorder Treatments

Along with being horribly unhealthy, eating disorders promote a continually degrading body image. Unlike many addictions, eating disorders aren’t chemical related so the condition is usually caused through psychological means.

Having an eating disorder isn’t easy and finding help can be a hard thing to do. Often personal pride gets in the way of someone finding meaningful help. If you have an eating disorder, or know of someone who does, get help.

Eating disorder treatments usually address much more complex and deep rooted problems.

Self esteem arguably plays the most important role in determining whether someone will even develop an eating disorder. Typically, a person with good self esteem won’t feel the need to change so dramatically and hence won’t develop an eating disorder. As a matter of fact, many studies have shown that those with high self esteem never even think about any of the symptoms or results associated with an eating disorder.

The only real way to treat an eating disorder is through either self therapy, or assisted self therapy. For someone with an eating disorder it may simply come down to coming to terms with who they are and how they look. If they do not have the capability, or simply lack the desire to do so, assistance through other means can prove beneficial. Something as simple as opening up to a friend or family member can be the catalyst needed for a change to take place.

Admitting that someone suffers from an eating disorder can create a multitude of emotions, from anger to vulnerability. If someone you know opens up to you about this it is important that you do not react emotionally, but rather be understanding and do what you can to help them through it. No matter how much you push someone it is up to them to make the decision to help themselves.

Individual therapy is where the individual suffering from an eating disorder will attempt to work out the causes of the disorder with a friend, family member, or professional therapist. This can unearth hidden emotions, memories, insecurities, etc. Though uncomfortable at times, this is one of the best ways for someone to come to terms with themselves.

Group therapy is where the individual suffering from the eating disorder will attend therapy with those that are also affected by their disorder. For example, an individual’s family may attend group therapy with them to learn about how to cope wit the condition and how to promote appropriate healing and response.

There are also many support groups available for someone suffering with this condition. This can be healthy as those in the group are also suffering and can relate on a much more involved level as opposed to just try to empathize.

No matter the situation it is important to find eating disorder treatment as soon as possible. They can bring on many mental and physical problems and the earlier they are dealt with the better it is for the person suffering from them.

Be a parent, a friend, or a companion to someone and try to help them through it. Don’t tell them how to do it, but support steps in the right direction.
