Getting a sprained ankle or a bruise is just one of those things that happen to people who like to get out there and live life. Whether it be playing a game of rugby on the grass with your kids or even lifting something heavy, sprains and bruises happen to all of us. Sometimes a bruise can look quite scary, especially when it starts to go yellow, brown, blue or purple and we start wondering if we are going to make it out alive. At least they are a great way to impress your friends or show your battle scars after a long day on the sports field or getting hit by a ball.
However, getting an ankle sprain (for example) can also be quite serious if you don’t take the time to let it heal. Similarly, a sprained wrist or even a sprained finger can keep you out of your normal activities and become quite painful. These are some great tips on treating yourself when you’ve been in the wars or are injured from physical activity.
Sprained Wrist Treatments (and other areas)
If you find yourself injured and you have a wrist sprain for instance don’t use your hand. Allow it to rest and make sure that you put something cold on it. It may be unpleasant but your best bet is ice. Ice can help prevent you from bleeding too much internally by contracting the blood vessels and controlling the flow. Of course, this will be uncomfortable and you will need some sort of buffer between you and the ice. You can try a material cloth or a bag.
If you don’t have any ice, you can use something else from the freezer that is separated into units inside the bag like vegetables or freeze pops. You should just do this for a few minutes and be sure to check that your sprained wrist doesn’t start looking white or going hard. Blood must still flow. The same tactic can be used for a sprained shoulder or an elbow sprain but someone may have to assist you in holding it there. It is important to remember that if you see irregularities in the skin or you cannot regain color, you need to contact a doctor.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a sprained foot or a sprained finger; you need to elevate the injured part to ensure that blood doesn’t build up. This will just be a painful process and increase the time it takes for you to heal. If you rest the area and make sure that you don’t allow blood to all build up in one area, it shouldn’t be too painful.
You can also try a bandage to stop your wrist sprain from being aggravated by movement of the joint. It is particularly difficult with areas that you are forced to use for basic movement like if you have a sprained foot for example. Bandages and even crutches can form part of your ankle sprain treatment and help alleviate bruising. If you want to prevent sprains, be sure to warm up before any major physical activity, don’t carry things that are too heavy and make sure that you don’t twist your body into unnatural positions as far as possible.
