9 Signs of Diabetes

Thirst a sign of diabetes

Diabetes is a growing problem in the United States. Around 17 million Americans are diabetic, which is approximately six per cent of the population. The people who are most at risk of type 2 diabetes are those of African-American, Hispanic, Native American and Asian American heritage. At least a third of people with diabetes do not even know that they have the condition. What are the diabetes signs that you should be aware of?

1. You are frequently thirsty
Being thirsty a lot is one of the diabetes signs that you should be looking out for. It is usually one of the first indications of type 2 diabetes. The thirst is usually a continuous one.

There are two main types of diabetes. With diabetes insipidus, excessive thirst occurs when there is a reduction in the hormone that controls the excretion of water within your body. This causes your kidneys to excrete too much water, which causes you to become dehydrated. This is why you feel the need to drink more to compensate. Thirst also occurs when too much sugar is forced into the blood. This causes you to urinate more frequently. With diabetes mellitus, excess glucose in the blood causes too much water to be drawn out of your tissues, which makes you dehydrated. To combat this, you drink more fluid, which again leads to frequent urination. In both cases, if your excessive thirst is a sign of diabetes, you will often need to wake up during the night because you are thirsty.

2. You need the toilet a lot
Frequent urination is another diabetes sign. Most people only need to urinate a few times every day, but diabetics are likely to need to urinate far more frequently. This happens because excess sugar in your blood causes your body to become dehydrated. Your body encourages you to drink more fluid to counteract this, which is why you need to use the toilet a lot. It can indicate type 2 diabetes.

3. Your mouth is dry
A dry mouth can also be something to consider when looking for diabetes signs. Your sugar levels are increased as a result of diabetes, and this can affect your oral hygiene. Common complaints are gum disease, cavities, dry mouth, and even loss of teeth, although the latter is fairly rare. Ironically, these can make your diabetes more difficult to control, as oral infections make your sugar levels increase further, and more insulin is needed to stop this. Diabetes also decreases your ability to taste sweet things, which often means that you feel the need to add sweeteners to your food as compensation. This makes your sugar levels increase, as well as having a negative effect on your oral health. It is not all bad news though. Having an awareness of how diabetes can affect your oral health, and vice versa, is essential to preventing and treating complications. A dry mouth is a sign of type 1 diabetes.

4. Your vision is blurry
Blurred vision can be a type 1 diabetes sign. It is one of the first indications of eye problems that are related to diabetes. Excess sugar in the blood causes the lens to change in shape and become less flexible. This affects how well you can focus, and causes your vision to become blurred. Other problems linked to diabetes include double vision, cloudy vision and floating spots in front of the eye. Double vision happens when the nerves that control your eyes are damaged. Cloudy vision usually occurs as a result of cataracts, or when the retina becomes swollen.

5. You have cuts and other sores that take a while to heal
Wounds that are slow to heal can indicate type 2 diabetes. Having diabetes means that your body is less effective at fending off infections.

6. You experience itching in and around the vagina
Vaginal itching and burning can be a diabetes sign. It can indicate type 2 diabetes. The skin in and around the vagina may also be red and sore. This can indicate a vaginal yeast infection. Regular yeast infections (in the vagina) can be another diabetes sign. Regular in this sense means anything above three or four yeast infections per year. This can be a sign of type 2 diabetes. The yeast that is naturally present in your vagina feeds on sugar in your blood. When you are diabetic, you have too much sugar in your blood, which means that the yeast can multiply at a very rapid pace. High blood sugar also decreases your body’s ability to fight infections, and the amount of “good” bacteria in your vagina is diminished, so the yeast can easily take over. A yeast infection is an indication that your diabetes is not being adequately controlled, as your blood sugar levels are clearly too high. The symptoms include a thick, white vaginal discharge (which can be very similar to the texture of cottage cheese), which is usually accompanied by itching, burning or soreness in and around your vagina. The discharge also tends to smell unpleasant.

7. Your hands and feet feel numb and tingle
Tingling in the hands and feet is another diabetes sign, and can indicate type 2 diabetes. When there is too much sugar is your blood, it can cause nerve problems, particularly the tiny blood vessels within the nerve. This can lead to multiple problems, but the most common one is a tingling or numb feeling in the hands and feet. Other possible symptoms can include burning sensations in the feet, hands, legs and arms.

8. The skin on your neck, armpit and groin suddenly gets darker
If the skin on and around your neck, armpit or groin has become darker, it can be a sign of type 2 diabetes. It is quite rare, and affects only one in every 300 people with diabetes. It is not restricted to the neck, armpits or groin though, and it can appear anywhere on the body. It can be very unsightly if it is on an area that people will see. It can affect people who are overweight. There is no known cure for the condition, but if obesity is a deciding factor, losing weight can help to ease the symptoms. However, it can also affect people who are otherwise healthy (apart from being diabetic).

9. You have inexplicably lost or gained weight
This diabetes sign can be an indication of type 1 diabetes. Your body tries to compensate for the lost fluids by encouraging you to eat more, which is why you can put on weight when you become diabetic. On the other hand, you can also lose weight, even if you have not decreased your food intake. This is because the tissues in your muscles are not receiving enough glucose, so their growth and energy is disrupted. If you have type 1 diabetes, there is very little sugar reaching the muscles.

Many of these symptoms can also be indications of other health problems, so it is important to be tested for diabetes to rule out other conditions. A glucose test will measure the amount of glucose in your blood. This can be done by simply pricking your finger, so it is very straightforward. If you are diabetic, your doctor will advise the treatment that is needed, depending on whether you are a type 1 or type 2 diabetic.

  • TAMMY May 24, 2011, 9:32 am

i want u to give me all the signs of diabetes i feel weak all the time and sometimes pains in my stomach please could u help me many thanks

    • Anonymos August 22, 2011, 6:27 am

theres a chance that this is diabetes, but you could also have lactose intolerance or ciliac disease, my brother has celiac disease and when he just ignored it he got bad abdominal pain and was in bed most of the time. My cousin had lactose intolerance and she got bad stomach cramps and pain. Too see if you are lactose intolerant, take a simple test at home by not eating dairy products (including products containing dairy) for 3-4 days, then after doing that, the next day drink a glass of milk and nothing else. If you experience pain, there’s a big chance you are lactose intolerant. Hope I helped, and i hope you’ll be okay.

      Stomach ache isn’t diabetes.
Let me clarify the main signs of diabetes:
      1.frequent thirst
      2.frequent urination
      3.mouth dry
There are a lot of other signs but its better 4 u to go 2 test it.
      thanks

      • Sivapriya September 28, 2014, 8:24 pm

Actually, stomach ache can be a sign of diabetes, particularly diabetic ketoacidosis. Please don’t spread misinformation. This disease can be hard enough to diagnose, when the symptoms seem so commonplace.

      • Michele March 17, 2015, 1:56 pm

It can be a sign… I was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 6 I am now 26 and my early signs were constant stomach pains, not coloring in the lines in school(probably blurred vision even though to this day I don’t need or have glasses), and loss of weight. Hope this helps someone ..

  • Lou June 5, 2011, 3:18 am

I seem to have most of the signs. I get dizzy of an afternoon and I am getting boils in areas that you don’t want boils! Is this signs as well??

    • Melissa December 27, 2011, 3:28 am

All u can do is go to the doc before its too late its always better to b safe then sorry….when i first got my type one diabetes i had them in that area as well and im not talking small…… it worked best if u soak in a hot bath with Epson salt then make a paste with garlic and baking soda put it on the boil wait till it dries to a crust it draws all the ewwies out it freakn burns like H-E- double hockey sticks but when u cant walk and have to work in the morning its the olny thing that works fast…… u may have to repeat the process a couple times till its all drained out good luck!

    • Erin Brusaw April 2, 2012, 3:23 pm

No not nessascerily because when i figured i had diabetes i was losing weight and i was very thirsty and going to the bathroom a lot , But i am type 1. Type 2, you can get cuts from anything and it won’t heal for a while , your skin gets darker than your original color is.
      So i hoped that helped

  • franchesca July 20, 2011, 3:14 pm

As i look at this I see that I have 7 signs from all the 9 signs. does that mean im diabetic?

    • Erin Brusaw April 2, 2012, 3:25 pm

Well it could be, you will have to go to the doctor to see if you have diabetes by checking your urine sample and if they see a lot of sugar in it you possibly have type 1 or type 2

    • dom defilippis September 16, 2012, 11:54 pm

hi the best way to finf out is to go to your FAMILY DR FOR A BLOOD TEST .THAT THE ONLY WAY.REGARDS STAY WELL DOM D

  • Anonymos August 22, 2011, 6:20 am

i’m so scared, i have had 2 yeast infections in the past 3 months but this is the only time it has ever happened to me, and i urinate a lot when i drink coke… these are my only symptoms

    • Phil48All August 25, 2014, 6:51 am

      Hi,
I was in the ER twice last Oct, twice in Nov, twice in Dec, twice in Jan and once in Feb 2014. I went each time for bladder infections. The dr. on 2/5/2014 came in and said that all my other urine cultures had yeast in them, and that my blood glucose was really high. He said the bladder infections, the yeast and the high glucose meant I was type II. I have been taking Metformin, and it has helped to bring my AC1 and BG levels down, but now I’ve noticed two weird sores on my legs? I also had a boil, (hair follicle infection) in my armpit. I had had one every 6 months to a year, and never thought anything about it. I just thought they were boils and that they would eventually go away. I also have a spinal condition which causes my immune system to be low, so the boils were most likely a form of MRSA – Medically Resistant Staph. They put me on antibiotics, and it went away, but now I’m getting these small, flat sores on my left leg. The first one seemed like I had spilled milk on my leg cuz it was just like skin flaking off? But underneath it, was a red flat spot, so I figured I had been bitten by something? Now I’ve got one on another part of the lower leg. I’m going to have to make an appt to see the dr. before it goes away so I can find out what it’s related to. All I know is that I’m almost 53 and since 50, I’ve been going down hill fast! Anyone wanna try and stop me? lol. Hope this helps you? Go see your dr. ASAP and get a Fasting Blood test. That is the best way to tell what is going on. A yeast infection can also occur if you have been taking antibiotics? But the best bet is to tell your dr. and get tested! They will likely run a panel on everything to see what it is, and to rule out other stuff that it might be.

      Good luck and God Bless!

P.S. stay away from the soda! High glucose content! It could be causing you to be borderline diabetic! Again, Good luck!

      • Bobbi Meikel March 17, 2017, 2:25 am

Did you find out what the sores are i have one on my hand wont go away almost looks like a flat blood bluster

      • Eric March 13, 2018, 1:49 am

I had a similar experience as you. I’m 53 now and I believe I’ve been having trouble for a few years, that I thought was kidney problems, and I misdiagnosed, some how.
I’ve never seen anything like this before. All of a sudden I’m falling apart. I feel awful all the time. Barely making it. Pain in my joints. Losing muscle. Blurry vision. Tingling in my hands and feet. Equilibrium off. Exhaustion.
Two days ago I found out I had diabetes. My BSC was 206. I went in this morning for more extensive blood tests.
This is not something to mess around with. It will kill you. And the early signs are subtle. Catch it early. Change your lifestyle and stop the progression.

I am fatigued, have dry mouth, constantly drinking water, get up at least 5 times a night to go the the bathroom, and during the day have to have water or my mouth feels like sand paper. Is it Diabetes?

    • Erin Brusaw April 2, 2012, 3:28 pm

You probably have type 1 diabetes because i have my mouth dry, i usually drink 7 huge water bottles everyday because i am so thirsty
I use the restroom at least 20 times each day.
But then i went to the docotr and then they said i had type on diabetes it not that bad

      • lita November 7, 2014, 11:36 am

This is untrue I was 39 when I was diagnosed with type 1

  • Kit August 26, 2011, 11:33 pm

Sometimes I feel weak, light-headed and get stomach pains for a few seconds. Don’t have to get up in the night though! When I was a baby I was allergic to milk, could it be lactose intolerance or diabetes? I feel like I am going the toilet more but I’m not sure if I am! Any suggestions, starting to get worried!

  • rick August 27, 2011, 4:39 am

You can always test your blood sugar with a “no code” finger stick lancet tester available at any drug store for $10-20. If your blood sugar is way out of the ranges listed in the manual, it may be a sign to visit the doctor.

    • norma nugent December 13, 2011, 8:39 am

You have diabetes and your blood level is quite high. Are you on medication, if not see your doctor. High blood sugar will make you very tired…It will go down too if you cut your carbs to under 100 a day. Limit breads, Pasta, goodies. Take diet sodas and sugar substitutes

      • James May 31, 2012, 9:25 am

Pile of horse crap, dont talk rubbish i am feeling tired a lot ankle pain stoamch cramps needing toielt al ot etc and guess what i have already been tested for diabities and came back negative so dont go off what norma says, cause it could be a number of things beside diabities.

        • Nicole June 30, 2012, 12:02 pm

With sugar levels of that nature it very well looks like diabetes! My friends son was admitted to the hospital with numbers that high and when I had it when I was pregnant going anything over 130 was a no no to be corrected with insulin….

          • kelly August 12, 2013, 9:06 pm

With that blood sugar, she’s a Type 2 diabetic. Go to your doctor, like yesterday

        • MSN May 10, 2013, 3:16 pm

Really James? She was giving an opinion. I don’t see M.D. behind your name which means you don’ t know it isn’t diabetes just like she doesn’t know that it is. She was giving an opinion, which the last time I looked, was legal in the U.S.

  • Leah coster January 8, 2012, 9:11 am

    • Freaking out June 2, 2015, 11:23 pm

Same!! I’m 15 so does age matter??? I am scared i experience the symptoms! Are there any more symptoms???

  • Kelley January 15, 2012, 10:07 pm

I keep thinking that it wouldn’t make sense for me to be diabetic. I’m in the normal weight range for my height. I eat fairly well and exercise. I am excessively thirsty at night, this has been going on for years and only seems to be getting worse. I could nap anytime of the day, which I guess means I’m fatigued. I started really wondering when I ended up with a detached retina in one eye and a torn retina in the other, I’m 29, the doc said someone my age and health had a 1:10000 chance of this happening. Next came frequent yeast infections. I’m a bit freaked out. Please advise!

    • Jeanne February 12, 2012, 4:56 am

Please see a doctor if any of these symptoms are interfering with life.
Diabetes can affect your whole body. Even feet , skin, organs, weight, eyes. It is nothing to be afraid of …just get the help you need , and a doctor who specializes in the disease.

    • pixiemom904 July 14, 2012, 6:28 pm

First of all you need to talk to your father about this so you can go to the dr. secondly you need to abstain from sex. If you dont at least use protection so you wont get an STD. You may have an infection like Urinary Tract Infection which may cause the feeling around your vagina. Most importantly always talk to your father. Go to the dr. to get checked in case its something really serious.

There are plenty of ways to prevent diabetes if don’t have it yet.. exercise is most important and a healthy diet but most importantly stay away from eating sugars and junk food excessively like chips, soda, candy etc. I am grateful for my doctor to discover i had the diabetes type 1 (the good kind that can go away with exercise and healthy diet)at age 13 when i was overly overweight .It went away just as soon as i started exercising and eating three healthy meals a day. Im 20 now and ever since that happend it made me realize how important it is to stay healthy and exercise.

  • Grace May 3, 2012, 10:06 pm

Hi ok so last week and so far all this week I have been peeing a lot!!!! Once every hour or sometimes even more frequently. I also get tingling in my hands and feet a lot (more so in my hands lately) even when I’m not putting any kind of pressure on them to cause the tingling. And last week I was also losing weight too without even trying. Im 13 and not over weight at all either. I’m also tired All the time lately and I’ve been feeling rly weak too :( which is awful because during soccer practice I get so tired and weak so easily lately and I don’t want to let the team down bc I can barely run :(. Lastlyyyy, I’m not CONSTANTLY thirsty but there r definitely a lottt times where I NEED to drink water. So ya I’m Wondering if it’s diabetes but I’m going to the doc. on Monday so I’ll just find out then..

I recently had my blood drawn to see if I have diabetes, I am waiting on the results, but I have at least 6 of these symptoms and what I experience is weight gain ( hard time losing weight ) fatigue, constantly drinking water, I pee an average to 10 or more times a day, I do see floating spots, however my eyes are fine, since they were recently checked. I get numbness in my feet and fingers at times, very unusual, more so in the hands. My main symptoms are though is peeing a lot, fatigue, weight gain, and thirsty a lot. I am curious if this could be diabetes.

I don’t know what it is. It only happens during the morning usually. Any ideas?

  • Paige October 1, 2012, 7:00 pm

My insurance ended tree months ago and so even though I feel bad I don’t want to just run out to the doctor if it’s nothing. But here lately I am thirsty all of the time my mouth and throat are dry, I get hungry and it seems if I don’t eat right away I get light headed and have stomach pains, I’m always tired , and I seem to be more snappy when hungry, I don’t have to pee all the time but still quite often, and this scared me because it never happens my private parts itch lately no matter what I do about it, oh and the heel of my foot aches a lot but especially when I walk but it never did before.

  • Taryn November 23, 2012, 4:45 pm

I have decrease appetite and I try to gain weight but it seems the more I eat I can’t gain weight. Last week I threw up and all that came out was water cause I had no food in my system and I was so dizzy and now I’m getting worried and I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Are they signs or of something else?

  • E2chukwukerem November 27, 2012, 1:43 am

  • concerned girl December 11, 2012, 7:53 pm

Hi I always see spots so I gusset that would be blurred vission. Also I have very dried lips,I am very thirsty at times and I usually have a tingle in my right leg plus my grandma and grandpa are dieabetic. But I’m only 12 and am in good shape could I still have type 1 or 2 diabetes? I really need to know.

    From a concerned girl

  • E2chukwukerem December 29, 2012, 11:53 am

I have seen all the diabetic signs you mention and none have shown in my body. The only sign that i have seen is that i urinate in the night sometimes from 10pm to 4or 6am 3times a night and sometimes 5 to 7times a night. And in the day sometimes from 6am to 8pm, i may urinate between 3 to 5times. What is my problems? Yours CHUKS.

  • manu January 27, 2013, 8:28 pm

hi there, twice or thrice lately i went back to the toilet and found some black ants on the toilet bowl flocking to some urine on it. does that mean that my urine has high sugar level?

  • Halie February 5, 2013, 9:43 pm

I am almost 17 years old and I have noticed over the last 3 weeks I have become increasingly thirsty. It’s to where no matter how much I drink my mouth is still dry. especially at night and I hate it because it makes you have to pee all the time. I have also become very tired lately and my eyes a little blurry. I have been eating normal but I seem to have lost a few pounds but I only weigh (now) 112 lbs. would these be signs of diabetes? I’m a little scared…

  • Victoria April 20, 2013, 5:37 am

I’m amazed reading all these questions & answers. (I came across this site while looking up a HbA1C test meaning).

If you have health questions, go to the doctor. That’s what he is there for.
You can’t diagnose on the internet – there are so many health conditions that have similar symptoms.
There are simple blood and urine tests which your Dr will refer you for to assist in his/her diagnosis.

Once your questions have been answered and a diagnosis made, a treatment plan & prognosis will be made, or referral to a Specialist or Hospital Dept.

Once you know exactly what diagnosis & prognosis (or treatment) is planned, it can be helpful to THEN do reading and research (books and/or internet) so that you are well informed and educated on that particular health condition.

A simple thing like poor diet can induce a load of symptoms that mimic serious health conditions, but that doesn’t mean you are sick. It might mean you have a vitamin or mineral imbalance.

A Dr needs to take a full health history (incl your parents & perhaps grandparents health). The Dr may do blood tests, urine tests, x-rays, ultrasounds, MRIs or other tests to assist with diagnosis.

It is no use following a standard diet off the internet if you are lactose or grain intolerant (or sensitive to dairy & grains as I am). The same with medications. It is essential that you have a fully qualified medical practitioner co-ordinating diagnosis and any treatment or specialists that you may need to see.

If you are worried………go to the Doctor. If you prefer less orthodox treatment, see an orthodox doctor who is also trained in naturapathic medicine and you will get the best of all types of treatment & diagnosis – orthodox AND alternative.

Eg. A Naturapath diagnosed my Aunt with ‘pulled stomach muscles” as she did a lot of gardening and heavy lifting on the farm, but by the time she went to an orthodox western trained medical doctor due to the severity of the pain, it was too late. She had cancer, they operated and found they could do nothing as it was so far advanced and she died 3 months later.

If you’re a teenager or shy/nervous adult, ask your parent, guardian, adult sibling or trusted adult friend to go to the Doctor with you.

    • Lin May 26, 2013, 8:04 pm

You know it would be wonderful if everyone could just ‘go to a dr.’ But many people do not have insurance, do not have money and so cannot go to a dr.

Of course we should see a dr!!! that’s a no brainer! But if you do not have the resources, seeing a dr is out of the question.
That is why people use the internet to get info on their symptoms!

  • MJH May 20, 2013, 12:34 pm

I was recently have been very thirsty and going to the toilet very often. I had my blood tested and was 11.3 meaning I have diabetes.

I have cut down on sugar intake, control my diet and doing some exercise and have taken low dose medications. The thirst has gone, and no longer gets up in the night to use the toilet 2 -4 times. I still have bit of numbness and needle poke on my leg but that is also improving.
Does this mean my situation has improved?

I feel out of it a couple days of the week recently like as if I was like high, but I’m not. I’ve been drinking like lemonade and water excessively, my ankles hurt and are swollen all the time (not sure if this has anything to do with anything lol), peeing a lot, sweating heavenly sometimes out of no where, and my ribs hurt all the time.

  • Female June 4, 2016, 2:48 am

Ok I’ve had this constant problem growing up, and my dad had type 2 diabetes which has got me wondering. My feet, my hands, sometimes my legs and arms will constantly go numb or have a prickling feeling. Another thing is they feel like ice even with gloves and socks on, and tremble quite a bit I’m kinda used to that though. Also I’m constantly tired, and I usually sleep frequently cause I feel like I have no energy; and I’m active but not to the point to where I should feel tired everywhere I go. I’m 16, and feel like an 80yr old woman. I’m far from overweight too so it’s kinda frustrating. And my body does this thing where it makes me feel sick, or like a weight is clenching my chest and my stomach; from eating my normal food like cereal which I put like a bit of the bag of sugar in, but if I eat something salty I get almost like a burning pain instead of a heavy weight pressure. So yeah I’m just curious, cause I kinda getting annoyed cause . Also to end this I read in the article about eye problems can it lead to a bad astigmatism, in the eyes.

  • Ashley Weber June 12, 2016, 8:02 pm
